Although I really enjoy the occasional girly drink, it took me longer than it should have to try a Cosmo, in part because vodka and I were no longer in speaking terms after certain college hangovers. Our reconciliation, however, could have not happened in a better place: Pravda (Russian for truth, named after a leading newspaper during the Soviet Union). It was then that I learned that paying for good vodka today will keep you from paying for it tomorrow.
Opened 4 years ago and located at 1113 Decatur St., Pravda features a lounge atmosphere, a traditional brick patio, and the most interesting bathroom lock I have encountered. While they keep it local by offering a great selection of Absinthe, I dare say, you won’t find another bar like Pravda in town. Where else in the city can you find 50 varieties of vodka? From Russian to Polish, Canadian, New Zealander or French, and ranging between $4-10 a shot, you will be delighted by any pick you make. Dimitri, one of the bartenders, will gladly guide you through their vast selection and will share that the best way to drink vodka is chilled, with a splash of water, and a lime on the side. If you still think vodka tastes like sipping rubbing alcohol, Dimitri had the best description of the real deal: good vodka is flavorless and clean. His personal favorite? Russian Standard Platinum. In addition, Pravda serves Zakuski (the Russian equivalent to tapas, meant to be paired with vodka or strong drinks) from Thursday to Sunday. So if you are ready to rediscover those White Russians and Cosmos, or if you are a vodka enthusiast looking for a chance to indulge, Pravda is the perfect place for you.
