Common Ground Health Clinic 7th Annual Fire Cider Brewing (Sat, 12/10)

fire-cider3-bottles

What is Fire Cider exactly? Just the ultimate cure for anything that ails ya. A combination of ginger, garlic, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, horseradish, and hot peppers buried in the ground and allowed to ferment for thirty days, its an all natural herbal remedy for use at the first sign of a cold or flu. It is also an excellent external liniment for use on the chest for congestion, or to ease the pain of sore muscles.

Common Ground Health Clinic (CGHC) gathers each December at the community garden on Teche Street to make the winter tonic. The event will begin with an educational session led by the CGHC Herbalists, and will continue through the afternoon preparing ingredients, combining them in glass jars and, finally, burying them in the ground to brew. This is a great chance to experience some hands-on learning of herbal remedies past & present.
People of all ages are welcome to this event, and encouraged to bring a snack and a beverage to share, and a small (pint) glass jar with a lid. Participants are encouraged to return in January to dig it up their concoctions and celebrate with a feast.

On December 10, seven teams will compete for the title of CHEW DAT CHAMPION in the first ever Rethink cook-off fundraiser. Benefitting Rethink, a group of visionary middle school students responsible for bringing structural and ideological reforms (http://www.therethinkers.com/what-weve-done-2/ ) to RSD schools in New Orleans, each team will prepare four dishes using a secret ingredient from the Rethink garden. Teams will then present their dishes to a panel of celebrity judges and an enthusiastic crowd.

Teams are in competition not only for finalized dishes but also for key ingredients. For every $10 you donate, your team will receive 25 cents to spend on ingredients beyond a basic pantry. The more you give, the more scrumptious the dishes, the better your team’s chance of winning the coveted Golden Fork!

You can donate now to the team of your choice and join us for the Chew Dat Cook-Off Party on Saturday, December 10 from 6pm-9pm. Your donation will get you into the Cook-Off Party for free! Competing this year are teams Beet Dat, Team ESY, Juust Fuud, Team Mad Hella Beaucoup, Octupi en Regalia, ReHeaters, SLAMWICH! New Orleans historical community theatre organization, JUNEBUG PRODUCTIONS, proudly presents the debut of its new program, HOMECOMING PROJECT, on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3rd, 2011 at Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park.

HOMECOMING PROJECT is a place-based storytelling community engagement and performance series that asks New Orleanians, WHAT DOES HOME MEAN TO YOU?

After several months of hosting community dinners and story circles, Junebug will present several artistic illustrations of some of the recurring elements of home, of New Orleans, that have come out of these community engagement discussions surrounding the transition home after Hurricane Katrina, and current changes, challenges and developments in our communities.

The HOMECOMING PROJECT Second Line on December 3rd will not be a typical Second Line, but will take paraders on a journey around the Treme neighborhood where we will honor several of our cultural gems with traveling street theatre performances and community art installations at each stop.
