New music video from Fosterbear Films

By David Bear

Phat Word is definitely on a different tip than most rappers in this city. He has a very old school sort of approach, and while he can boast with the best of them, he’s also a super humble, conscious cat. Knowing that, simplicity was key here.

I really had two main influences in how I wanted the video to look: first off, I’ve been really digging on the Stevie Wonder’s ‘Music Of My Mind’ era, and I knew I wanted to incorporate that aesthetic. A few weeks before shooting, Jason Foster & I were in Florida at a restaurant, and the video for Eddie Grant’s ‘Electric Avenue’ came on. I really liked the sort of strobe effect I saw in it, and it worked with the Stevie Wonder stuff I was already high on, so I fell back on that too.

With these in mind, I also can’t stand it when I see videos that are completely reductive; being influenced is fine and good, but there has to be originality. So I tried to give those aesthetics I was working with an updated, unique touch.

Flexx Seal: Taking NOLA Electronic on May 10

Flex-party2

Chris Rengel, mastermind and founder of FLEXX SEAL, wants to bring the joy of electronic music to the New Orleans scene. Recognizing a massive resurgence of the genre in recent years and an unfortunate gap in the New Orleans music scene of such shows, Chris dreamed up FLEXX SEAL as an event series, and soon-to-be record label, which will offer NOLA denizens showcases of up-and-coming modern house, techno, and bass music producers from across the United States & beyond.

Rengel says that “With the wave is a world wide community of promoters and listeners who are supporting this music and bringing it to their city . . .[t]here’s no reason why New Orleans can’t be doing the same.”

Launched as recently as March 2012, this baby has already got on its big boy pants with associated acts such as LOL Boys (Body High / Los Angeles) and Astronomar (Mad Decent / Seattle), along with resident DJs Christopher Joseph (FLEXX SEAL / New Orleans) and Jim-E Stack (Good Years / New Orleans). On Thursday May 10th, Nashville’s MYRRYRS will be performing and celebrating the release of his new EP, I’m A State of Mind, at The Big Top (1638 Clio St.).

The associated record label is more of a work in progress, but it too will showcase young up-coming modern house & techno producers from here and elsewhere. (Local creatives, get those demos ready . . . )

For more information about upcoming releases and events, find them on Twitter at @FLEXXSEAL and at on Facebook.

Rocketboys Hit New Orleans on May 10

rocketboys

Indie-rock band The Rocketboys are coming to the Circle Bar on May 10. The band is gearing up to tour in support of their forthcoming album, Build Anyway, out on June 5.

On Build Anyway, The Rocketboys found new inspiration after the near dissolution of their band with soaring, heartfelt rock anthems that chronicle everything from the emotions that surface through the brokenness in abandonment to the search for peace and closure, both personally and musically.  The album seamlessly walks a dreamlike line of pain and comfort on ten passionate tracks like “Bloodless” and “Carry Me,” that further establish the The Rocketboys as one of indie-rock’s most promising bands.
