Fashion is a fickle industry, constantly changing and evolving. While industries like New York and Los Angeles are saturated with upstart companies, New Orleans is beginning to form its own strong, unique identity within American fashion. Truly, New Orleans style is special; it’s relaxed but classic, tailored but casual. The fabric that best describes New Orleans style is seersucker, a symbol of breezy yet buttoned-up New Orleans style, both fresh and ephemeral. Interestingly enough, the search for black seersucker is what sparked the inspiration for local men’s accessory line The… Read More »
Spotlight: T-Lot
Tucked right off of St. Claude, T-Lot feels like an exclusive, creative sanctuary, but it’s quite the opposite. The long-unused lawn and surrounding structures now hold inclusive events such as flea markets, performances and movie screenings. Founded in July of 2010 as a studio space for newer local artists (including Stephen Kwok, Hannah Chalew, Natalie McLaurin, Angela Berry, Siobhan Feehan and Brett LaBauve), it’s become a resource for the emerging art community and Marigny neighborhood. The space provides an opportunity for burgeoning creators to investigate and develop their artistic passions,… Read More »
Paper Diamond’s New Video Features New Orleans’ own Nasimiyu
Paper Diamond, the new venture (formed in 2011) for Pretty Lights and associated artist Alex B, just released its new EP Wavesight EP on May 3 and debuted its first music video on May 9. Now, before you get too excited, Paper Diamond aka Alex B is a Colorado-based act, but apparently he has no shortage of NOLA love. The first video debuted for the EP this week features local singer Nasimiyu Murumba (aka Nasimiyu) and local, well, er, locations (with at least Magazine Street being clearly identifiable.) Perhaps more important… Read More »
A Legacy Unveilied: Celebrating an Esteemed Civil Rights Leader
On Saturday, May 19, 2012 an official Louisiana State historical marker will be unveiled at the home of attorney A. P. Tureaud. A prominent civil rights attorney and contemporary of Thurgood Marshall, Alexander Pierre Tureaud, Sr. was born in New Orleans in 1899. He grew up acutely aware of racial segregation. Clearly one of the most influential civil rights leader of his time, his activism led to lawsuits successfully challenging pay inequality in Louisiana public schools, as well as segregation in higher education. Other suits involved the desegregation of New… Read More »
Amelie G Magazine: New Orleans Fashion’s Finest
If you didn’t get your New Orleans Fashion Week fix from InvadeNOLA (which I personally find preposterous), take a look at the Amelie G webzine and fashion magazine for full coverage of the events. Amelie G is New Orleans’ premiere fashion mag with monthly updates to the webzine blog and a quarterly printed publication. The magazine combines the epitome of old world style with hipster trends unique to NOLA, where other larger fashion mags miss their mark. Named after Parisian socialite Amelie Gautreau, Amelie G has been living up to its… Read More »
